15 Government Agencies to Work for in Nigeria: Qualifications, Pay and How to Apply
Public-sector jobs remain some of the most sought-after in Nigeria. They offer structured pay scales, pensions, and a clear promotion ladder. They also attract huge competition. In its latest cycle, the Nigeria Customs Service received 573,680 applications for just 3,852 positions. businessday
This guide is for Nigerian graduates, NYSC members, and school-leavers who want a realistic picture of federal agency careers. It covers which agencies are worth considering, what qualifications each typically requires, what we can and cannot say about pay, whether recruitment is open, and how to apply without losing money to scammers.
Two points about the list. First, “best” is an editorial judgment based on job stability, structured career progression, entry routes for different qualification levels, and transparency of recruitment. The agencies are not ranked in order. Second, several details change quickly. Check dates and links on each agency’s official site before you act.
The short answer
- Only one agency has a confirmed open window that I could verify through multiple reports: the EFCC. Its reported deadline is 1 November 2026, so act today if you qualify.
- Several security agencies are mid-process, not accepting new applications. The paramilitary board, the police, the FRSC and the Customs Service have all run big exercises. Their candidates are now in screening or final-list stages.
- Entry to federal civil service ministries is periodic and not fixed. The Federal Civil Service Commission opens windows irregularly.
- Every legitimate recruitment I found is free. If anyone asks for money, it is a scam.
Recruitment status snapshot (as of 31 October 2026)

How federal pay actually works
Before looking at agencies, it helps to understand the pay frameworks, because “salary” depends on the structure an agency uses.
The national minimum wage is ₦70,000 per month. The law raising it from ₦30,000 was signed on 29 July 2024. Federal workers have been pushing for more. One report says a federal workers’ forum wants entry-level pay set at ₦300,000 monthly. That is a demand, not law. thecabletecheconomy
CONPSS (Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure) governs the general federal civil service. It has 17 grade levels, with pay set by qualifications, experience and performance. Within each grade level there are steps, which rise with years of service. legit
Where graduates enter. In general, graduates typically start on Grade Level 08. One report puts GL 08 Step 1 at ₦1,479,276 per year, which works out to roughly ₦123,273 per month in basic pay. That figure is basic salary only and does not include allowances. campuscybercafelegit
Other structures exist. Paramilitary and specialised agencies use their own scales. For example, one aggregator lists the FRSC’s officer and marshal roles under CONPASS grade levels. Others, such as the CBN, run internal structures.
A warning about salary figures online. When I searched, I found sources giving widely different numbers for the same grade level. One site lists GL 08 Step 1 at ₦235,000, while another reports the annual figure above. Treat blog tables as rough guides, not facts. The authoritative source is the salary circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, which I could not access.
Basic pay is not take-home. Allowances (housing, transport, hazard or risk allowances for security roles) and pension deductions change the final amount. Ask your employer for a letter of appointment that specifies grade level, step, and allowances.
The 15 agencies
1. Federal Civil Service (ministries, departments and agencies, via the FCSC)
What it is: The broadest route into federal government employment. The Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) handles recruitment into many federal ministries, departments and agencies.
How recruitment works: It is periodic. The FCSC announced vacancies on 27 January 2025, and applicants complained about difficulty accessing the portal. The deadline was later extended to 17 March 2025. The FCSC has also partnered with JAMB to digitise recruitment and promotion exams. One secondary guide from January 2026 notes that no massive nationwide recruitment was ongoing, but the FCSC advertises specific vacancies regularly. nairametrics.com +3
Typical qualifications: A bachelor’s degree is the usual baseline for graduate-entry cadres, with NYSC completion and Nigerian citizenship. Requirements vary by cadre. Always read the advert.
Pay: CONPSS. Graduates generally enter around GL 08 (see pay section above).
Good to know: The Federal Ministry of Information has stated that BVN is never among formal requirements for FCSC recruitment. If a page asks for your BVN as a condition of applying, be suspicious. fmino
Best for: Graduates who want stability and a broad choice of ministries and cadres.
2. Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)
What it is: The country’s apex monetary authority, responsible for monetary policy and financial system supervision.
How recruitment works: The CBN recruits through its own announced cycles, usually with written tests and interviews. I could not verify any currently open vacancy.
Typical qualifications: Strong degree classes are usual for graduate roles, often in economics, finance, accounting, law, statistics, or ICT. Check the specific advert.
Pay: The CBN does not appear to publish a public pay scale. Numbers circulating online are unverified estimates, so I have not repeated them.
Best for: Graduates with strong academic records in economics, finance or quantitative fields.
3. Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS, formerly FIRS)
What it is: The federal tax authority. Secondary sources report that the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act 2025 replaced the FIRS Act, taking effect on 1 January 2026. A newspaper commentary similarly describes closing the curtain on FIRS in 2025 and welcoming NRS in 2026. awajisguardian
How recruitment works: The FIRS ran graduate and experienced-hire recruitment in 2025. Any current recruitment would now be announced under the NRS name. I did not find a verified open window.
Typical qualifications: Past adverts for tax officer roles asked for strong degrees, often First Class or Second Class Upper. Treat this as indicative only.
Pay: Not verified.
Best for: Accounting, finance, law and economics graduates.
4. Nigeria Customs Service (NCS)
What it is: The agency responsible for customs administration, trade facilitation, anti-smuggling and revenue collection at borders and ports.
How recruitment works: In its 2024/2025 exercise, the NCS received 573,680 applications for 3,852 positions. The Comptroller-General has said recruitment will become a standing, yearly process, and that the 2026 exercise will open later this year. As of late July 2026, successful candidates were being asked to upload medical certificates of fitness on an online portal. businessday.ng +2
Cadres: Entry has been through the Superintendent, Inspector, and Customs Assistant cadres. newscentraltv
Pay: Not verified.
Important: The Comptroller-General stated that no candidate has paid, and none should pay, anyone for a place on the list. von
Best for: Graduates and school-leavers willing to face a very competitive, multi-stage process.
5. Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS)
What it is: The agency that manages border security and enforces immigration law, along with passports and visas.
How recruitment works: The NIS recruits through the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), which covers four agencies: NSCDC, NCoS, FFS and NIS. The 2025 exercise opened in July. The portal stayed open until 11 August 2025 after an extension. A shortlist was released from 30 October 2025. A report says the board plans to reopen its portal from 28 October to 13 November 2026 for candidates to check their status. nairametrics.com +3
Typical documents: One guide lists an indigene letter and school certificates among the documents. Confirm requirements on the board’s portal. schoolngr
Pay: Not verified.
6. Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)
What it is: The agency that provides civil protection, disaster response and security for critical national infrastructure.
How recruitment works: The same CDCFIB process as above. One guide advises applicants to select only one agency, so choose the one that fits your strengths. schoolngr
Pay: Not verified.
7. Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS)
What it is: The agency overseeing custody, welfare and rehabilitation of inmates. It also handles non-custodial corrections. primeprogressng
How recruitment works: Through the CDCFIB, same as the NIS and NSCDC.
Why consider it: The service employs not just uniformed staff but also medical, legal, welfare and administrative professionals. It suits people interested in rehabilitation and social work.
Pay: Not verified.
8. Federal Fire Service (FFS)
What it is: The federal agency responsible for fire prevention and response.
How recruitment works: Through the CDCFIB, along with the three agencies above.
Why consider it: The role has a clear public-safety mission, with technical training in fire and rescue operations.
Pay: Not verified.
9. Nigeria Police Force (NPF)
What it is: The country’s primary law enforcement agency. Recruitment is run by the Police Service Commission (PSC) together with the NPF.
Latest exercise: The PSC announced recruitment of 50,000 police constables, with an application window of 15 December 2025 to 25 January 2026. Screening ran from 9 March to 18 April 2026. The written exam was held between 28 and 30 April 2026. A list of successful applicants was made available through the portal from 16 July 2026. Nigeria: Recruitment of 50,000 Police Constables – PSC Opens Application Portal +4
Requirements reported: Candidates had to present an original NIN printout or card, an O’Level certificate, a birth certificate or declaration of age, and a local government certificate. For general duty, the minimum height was reported as 1.67 metres for men and 1.64 metres for women. Entry categories include general duty and specialist constables. psc npf roll out nationwide screening for 50 000 police recruits march 9 +2
Cost: The PSC chairman said the exercise was entirely free of charge. crossriverstate
Pay: Not verified.
10. Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)
What it is: The agency that investigates and prosecutes financial crimes, including fraud and money laundering.
Current status (verify immediately): One report says the exercise was announced on 24 October 2026, with a deadline of 1 November 2026. It lists four categories. Another source says the portal is at recruitment.efcc.gov.ng and the application is free. I could not open the EFCC’s own notice, so confirm the dates and address from an official EFCC channel before you submit anything. A fake “EFCC recruitment” advert circulated in January 2026, according to a fact-check, so do not apply through any link you did not type or verify yourself. Some conditions apply to specific roles, such as height and marital-status rules for cadet applicants. Read the official notice for your category. withinnigeria
Pay: The announcement reportedly lists grade levels but does not state salary or allowances. Ignore social media salary claims. withinnigeria
Best for: Law, accounting, forensic, ICT, and investigative-minded applicants.
11. National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)
What it is: The agency that combats illicit drug trafficking and abuse, and runs counselling and rehabilitation.
How recruitment works: The NDLEA has opened an online portal for graduate recruitment in the past. I did not find a verified current window. Salary figures on blog sites are not official, so I have not used them.
Why consider it: Beyond enforcement, the agency employs lawyers, forensic scientists, counsellors and medical staff.
12. Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)
What it is: The agency responsible for road safety administration, traffic management and highway rescue.
Latest exercise: Applications opened 3 July 2026 for four weeks, through recruitment.frsc.gov.ng. Cadres were the officer cadre, marshal inspectorate and road marshal assistant. The Corps said the process was free. A news report adds that the previous exercise started in July 2025 and only reached physical screening in June 2026, with applicants complaining of delays. That is a reminder that these processes can take a year or more. Apply Now: FRSC Begins Nationwide Recruitment, Releases Application Link +4
Reported entry points:
| Cadre | Reported qualification | Reported age |
|---|---|---|
| Officer cadre | Degree or equivalent, with NYSC | Up to 35 |
| Marshal inspectorate | NCE, ND/OND, RN/RM or CHEW | 18 to 30 |
| Road marshal assistant | At least three SSCE credits including English and Mathematics | 18 to 30 |
Drivers and artisans have separate requirements, including a valid licence for drivers.
Pay: One aggregator lists these roles under CONPASS grade levels (for example, marshal inspector II and III at CONPASS 07 and 06, road marshal assistants at CONPASS 04 and 03). Treat this as indicative and confirm in the offer letter.
13. NNPC Limited
What it is: Nigeria’s national oil company. It is a limited liability company, not a conventional civil service agency, but it is government-owned and often grouped with public-sector employers.
Status: In January 2026 the company issued a scam alert saying “NNPC Limited is not recruiting”, and that hiring would be announced on its official website and verified social media. It has previously pointed applicants to careers.nnpcgroup.com. Check that portal directly instead of trusting any form shared on social media. sweetcrudereportsthecable
Pay: One guide says the company does not publish an official public salary scale. Treat “leaked salary” posts as fiction. naijasabi
14. Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)
What it is: The telecommunications regulator.
Status: I did not verify a current vacancy or published pay information. The NCC recruits through its own announcements. Visit its official website for current openings. Typical roles cover engineering, law, economics, consumer affairs and ICT.
15. Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) and similar specialised regulators
What it is: The NDIC protects depositors and supports banking stability. Other specialised federal bodies, such as NITDA (technology policy), also recruit professionals.
Status: Not verified. These bodies recruit through their own channels, often for professionals with specific degrees or certifications. Check each organisation’s careers page rather than relying on aggregator listings.
How the agencies compare
| Route | Entry level | Competition | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Civil service via FCSC | Degree, ND, SSCE depending on cadre | High, periodic | Broad graduate options |
| CBN, NRS, NCC, NDIC | Mostly graduate | Very high | Economics, finance, law, ICT |
| Customs, NIS, NSCDC, NCoS, FFS | SSCE to degree | Extremely high | Willing to join a paramilitary structure |
| Police | SSCE and above | Very high | Physical fitness, service orientation |
| EFCC | SSCE to degree, plus professionals | Very high | Investigative and professional skills |
| FRSC | SSCE to degree | High | Road safety, medical, technical |
| NNPC | Graduate programmes | Very high | Engineering, finance, operations |
Qualifications that count in practice
Across these agencies, a pattern holds:
- Degree or HND holders usually enter at a senior or officer level, often GL 08, and typically need NYSC discharge or exemption.
- ND or NCE holders enter at intermediate levels such as GL 06 or 07.
- SSCE holders enter at junior levels, often with a requirement of credits including English and Mathematics.
- Age limits are strict in uniformed services. The 2026 notices I found ranged from an upper limit of 25 to 35 depending on cadre, and up to 40 for professionals at the EFCC.
- Medical fitness and a clean record are required across the security agencies.
How to apply: a practical process
Process details differ, but the general steps are consistent. Follow the current instructions on the official portal, because I could not verify portal screens.
- Confirm the vacancy is real and open. Check the agency’s official website or verified social media. Look for the same announcement on at least two official channels.
- Type the portal address yourself. Do not click links from WhatsApp or Telegram.
- Pick the right cadre. Match your qualification, age, and NYSC status. Most exercises allow one application, and several warn that multiple applications can lead to disqualification.
- Prepare documents before you start. See the list below.
- Create an account with an email and phone number you will keep. Updates and screening instructions are often sent there.
- Fill the form with exact details. Names and dates must match your certificates. In the EFCC exercise, the report says applications cannot be edited after submission.
- Upload clear files in the requested format. The EFCC exercise reportedly accepts PDF, JPG or PNG, with most files capped around 250 KB.
- Submit, save your confirmation and print your form. Shortlisted candidates are often asked to bring printed copies.
- Check your status through the official portal only. For example, the PSC told police applicants to log in to its portal to see results.
Documents to have ready
| Document | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| NIN slip or card | Used for identity checks; the police exercise required an original printout or card |
| Birth certificate or age declaration | Proves you meet age limits |
| Certificate of state or local government origin | Required in federal-character-based exercises |
| O’Level results (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB) | Basic entry requirement |
| ND, NCE, HND or degree certificates | Needed for graduate and intermediate roles |
| NYSC discharge or exemption certificate | Required for most graduate cadres |
| Passport photographs | Used for forms and screening |
| Medical report | Often required at later stages |
| Professional licences | For doctors, nurses, lawyers, engineers |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Applying late. Portals often crash near deadlines. The FCSC portal had access problems in 2025. Apply early.
Mismatched details. A name spelt differently on your NIN and certificate can cause rejection. Fix mismatches before you apply.
Choosing the wrong cadre. Check age and qualification limits. Do not apply for a category you do not qualify for.
Multiple applications. Several agencies say duplicate applications can disqualify you.
Relying on social media. Fake adverts are common. The EFCC and NNPC have both been targeted.
Paying “agents.” Recruitment is free. The Customs Comptroller-General has said no one should pay for a place, and the PSC has warned against job racketeering.
Ignoring physical and medical requirements. Police, FRSC, and other uniformed roles have height, fitness, and medical rules. Check them early.
Giving up after a long wait. Some processes take over a year. The FRSC’s previous exercise took about eleven months to reach physical screening.
Staying safe from recruitment scams
- No legitimate federal recruitment I found charges application fees. The police, Customs, FRSC and EFCC have all said their processes are free.
- Verify the website address. Government sites typically end in gov.ng. Be careful with look-alike addresses.
- Beware of “guaranteed slots.” No one can guarantee you a place in a merit-based exercise.
- Do not share passwords, OTPs, or BVN with strangers.
- Report suspicious messages to the agency through its official contacts.
- Remember scammers copy real adverts. Even a message that looks official is not proof. Always cross-check on the agency’s own site.
Frequently asked questions
Is any of these agencies recruiting right now?
The EFCC appears to be, with a reported deadline of 1 November 2026. Verify on its official channels. For the others, I could not confirm an open window. Watch official sites.
Can I apply with only an SSCE?
Yes, for some cadres. The EFCC’s Detective Assistant category and the FRSC’s road marshal assistant cadre accept O’Level holders who meet the credit and age requirements. The police constable exercise also asked for an O’Level certificate.
Do I need NYSC?
For most graduate cadres, yes, either a discharge or exemption certificate. The reported EFCC and FRSC requirements include it for degree and HND roles.
What is the highest starting pay?
I cannot responsibly say. Official pay data by agency was not available, and online figures conflict. For general civil service, graduates enter around GL 08. Ask for the grade level and allowances in writing before accepting any offer.
Is the national minimum wage ₦70,000?
Yes, under the law signed on 29 July 2024. Federal workers have asked for a higher figure, but that is not law as of this writing.
How long does recruitment take?
It varies. The Customs 2024/2025 exercise began in December 2024 and reached a final list in mid-2026. The FRSC’s earlier exercise took about eleven months to reach physical screening.
How do I check my application status?
Log in to the same official portal you applied through, and read the instructions there. If a portal does not support status checks, use the contact channel the agency specifies.
Are state government jobs covered here?
No. State civil services recruit separately and set their own calendars.
Can I apply to more than one agency?
Often yes, if they are separate exercises, but within a single exercise (for example, the CDCFIB board) you generally choose one agency. Read each notice.
Conclusion
Working for a Nigerian government agency can offer stability and a clear career ladder, but the process is competitive, slow, and full of scams. Your most useful next steps are these:
- If you qualify for the EFCC exercise, verify the notice on official channels and apply today.
- If you applied to the CDCFIB agencies, the police or Customs, check your status only through the official portals.
- If you are not in any current exercise, gather your documents now, fix any name or date mismatches, and monitor the official sites of the agencies you prefer.
Never pay for a federal job. If someone asks you to, walk away.
Editorial note: Recruitment details change quickly. This article reflects information available on 31 October 2026. Check each agency’s official site before acting.
